In the darkest days of our lives, questions about God and life loom in the back of our minds.

What does it look like to trust God?

How do I keep on living well when nothing seems good?

Where are you God?

The book of Ruth is the story of a man and a woman living in dark times and facing a dark situation. It’s a story of God’s faithful love that overflows into the everyday lives of people. It’s a story of hope. It’s a story that reminds you the Lord has not left you.

Set in the dark times of the judges, one commentator said, “the Book of Ruth gleams like a beautiful pearl against a jet-black background.” In times of sinful, irresponsible living, Ruth is a call to responsible living driven by the faithful love of God and rooted in the hope of his rescue.

As we journey together over the next 4 weeks, let’s take hold of a strong hope that the Lord is faithful even in our darkest days, let’s pursue righteous living as we move into summer, and let’s watch as God redeems the parts of our story that are not what we had hoped they would be.

In the end, may what the women of Israel said to Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi be true: ““Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you without a family redeemer today. May his name become well known to Israel.” (Ruth 4:14)
